The very first photograph I took with a longer lens was of a robin. They pop up everywhere I go on walks, sometimes almost following me and posing for a photo. They are so common and familiar that I almost overlook them at times as I strive to photograph more unusual birds. But here are some photos from my files, including this very first one.

At this time of year it is one of the few birds still chirping out a wee melodic song. It can also sometimes sound a bit similar to a wren with a staccato tuk tuk tuk call.

They do like to know what’s going on around them and are not shy at coming close to humans.

Although friendly to man they are highly territorial and will defend territory aggressively , even killing intruders.

The robin our garden comes right up to the patio window looking for food. Some people train robins to feed from their hands.

Robins often cock their heads to one side when looking at you. I think this one was hoping I’d throw him a bit of my sandwich when I sat munching lunch at a favourite spot. His cheeky expression worked too!
