Froggies Went a Courtin’

By pure coincidence I discovered that today, March 20th is World Frog Day. The frogs seem to know it! On a walk today I was amazed at seeing scores of frogs and toads in the ponds and on the paths. The warmer weather must have brought them out of hibernation. There were about a hundred frogs at the corner of a pond all mating and spawning.

Frogs are smoother and slimier than toads and have long legs which stretch longer than their bodies and heads. They use their long legs to hop.

Toads tend to be a bit smaller and have much drier, wartier skin. They have shorter legs than frogs and tend to crawl rather than hop. People were trying to avoid stepping on them on the muddy path.

Like the frogs the toads were busy mating too, though not in such great numbers. I could hear them croaking .

We seem to have leap frogged into spring. Watch out for the frogs and toads when out and about.
