Dolphin Spotting

Last week I was up by the Moray Firth and took the chance to go dolphin spotting at Chanonry Point near Fortrose. The best chance of seeing them is when the tide is rising, about an hour after low tide. My brother kindly checked out the tide times for me and we arrived just in time to see some dolphins chasing fish in towards the point and sea birds flocking to catch some bites too.

Chanonry Point is also a magnet for dolphin photographers, and lenses big and small also make appearances as the tide is rising! I sat down on the shingle, not too close to the water’s edge as the tide was coming in, and snapped away with my medium lens. Unfortunately in my excitement I unwittingly sat on my mobile phone and damaged it.

There were about five dolphins fishing and although they showed their heads and tails from time to time unfortunately none of them “breached”, that is leapt clear out of the water. My brother described the sounds from the spotters as ” a few OOHS but not any AHHS” !

Nevertheless there can be some days when no dolphins show up so we counted ourselves lucky to see them.
