Snow Day

We’ve not had much snow this winter so when I saw a covering outside this morning I ventured out to try and capture some wildlife in the snow. First I took photos of some birds in and around the garden. One of my favourite birds is the blackbird, waiting for spring before it begins to sing its lilting, melancholy song.

Great tits are already making some noise, sometimes like a squeaky gate opening and closing.

This dunnock is quite a plain brownish bird but in spring and summer it sings beautifully.

And of course the robin, obliging as ever, posed in the brisk wind.

I headed up into the woods to try and see if some deer were sheltering there. Surprisingly I saw more gathered out in the open. One group of three or four too far away to photograph, then this one below in the middle of a moor with another next to it with only its antlers showing.

The one below was in the middle of a wood and I had anticipated this one below running in front of me as some dogs were barking on a higher path. I tried to capture it leaping past.

Hmmm, not quite the action shot I was hoping to achieve!

The highlight of my morning was catching sight of a lovely brown hare coming towards me in the snow. Normally they are haring away from the big lens. Here it is hunkered down against the wind.

And here are some photos of it running up the fence line.

I do love brown hares. Not long now till they begin their Mad March boxing season.

  1. Dear Sarah,I’m not sure, but I think there is a deer about to give birth in the land at the back of our house.   There are currently two which have been in the same spot for a couple of hours and one of them keeps looking round at her rear end!  it’s a repeat of a few years ago.Do come into our garden ans have a look across, if you’re about. I might be wrong but I might not be!Best wishesMatthew & Nigel 74 Lochiel 07922195926Sent from my Galaxy
