Today I had fun trying to distinguish molehills and boulders from actual hares lying low in the grass. Hares are nocturnal but spend the day lying out in scrapes, often in plain sight but blending in perfectly with the landscape.
Here is what I saw when I first spotted the hare above. Subsequent images show me moving in closer to it before I backed off and left it in peace.

Often what I think is a hare turns out to be a hare shaped boulder! The shadow on this boulder looks like a hare’s ear!

I came across this lovely hare in amongst the wild meadow flowers high up on the hillside. There was a buzzard mewing overhead and this creature kept absolutely still. I sat and watched it for a while but then backed off so as not to disturb it.

On the way down the hill I came very close to this furry mound and wondered if it was a corpse. I didn’t notice the eye.

This time as I approached to investigate the furry body leapt up and off! Sorry hare!

Keep your eyes peeled next time you’re out a walk in the countryside, sometimes it is only be a measly molehill …

Other times you’ll get a pleasant surprise …
