The “golden hour” for nature watchers and photographers is the hour at the beginning or end of the day just after sunrise or just before sunset. Then the light is low and takes on a magical golden quality. Here are some photographs taken this winter at both ends of the day. Below is a brown hare sitting upright, all senses on high alert.

Then a robin with its auburn breast catching the light.

I spotted this redpoll in amongst a charm of goldfinches feasting on seeds from these pine cones.

Below is a reed bunting.

Long tailed tits normally fly in flocks but this one seemed to be separated from its pack.

Here is the pair of hares whom I’ve nicknamed “Topsy and Turvy”, but don’t ask me to tell them apart.

These pink footed geese have been feeding in nearby fields over the winter but soon will be heading back to Greenland in the Spring.

Winter has provided many golden moments, not least when the sun sets behind leafless silhouetted trees.
