The other day we went for a picnic at Antermony Loch. My other half asked me if the ospreys were still about. I wasn’t sure but his question was answered by the sighting of one! It was a distance away from us and we saw some unsuccessful dives before it finally caught and flew off with its dinner. I didn’t have my big lens with me so was content to watch it in the distance.
But then when we were sat down on a bench having our sandwiches another one appeared and flew in close to us. I thought it would just be the thing if it caught a fish in front of us when I didn’t have my big lens. Suddenly the nearby coots squawked with alarm as the osprey plummeted downwards. Then there was a huge splash and I grabbed my camera. Right in front of us the osprey struggled to make it out of the water with its catch. Ospreys do sometimes drown as they are pulled down under the water by the weight of the fish and become too waterlogged so I was a bit worried.

Thankfully it eventually heaved itself up out of the water.

Then we watched awestruck as it flew off across the loch and out of sight.

What a wonderful sight! Good to see before they return to Africa for the winter.
Fantastic!!
