Colorado boasts some mighty mammals such as bears and elk, however it was the wee critters which thankfully crossed my path and posed for photos. Chipmunks are only 10cm high when standing up and are incredibly cute.

Then high up the mountainsides, scurrying over loose rock fields were picas. They are the size and shape of guinea pigs but with mouse like ears.

At this time of year they are busy collecting vegetation to line their winter dens with. This one would disappear into a rock crevice with a stash of leaves in its mouth then come back out to collect some more.

There were lots of woodland squirrels, also known as chickarees, collecting pine cones and nuts.

In the tree lined neighbourhoods and parks of Denver where we were staying there were lots of reddish ground squirrels scampering about.

I couldn’t resist photographing them.

Some played hide and seek with me.

I see you squirrel! Have a good one!
