As well as the flamingos in Mallorca there were many other wetland waders which were new to me. I loved seeing the black winged stilts, named because of their stilt like legs. When they flew their legs trailed out behind them.

The heron was as common as back home, always so photogenic, especially when reflected in the water.

We thought this big bird looked like a penguin sitting in the bushes. I had to look it up in my bird book. It is a night heron, which is active at dawn and dusk but can often be seen roosting in branches during the daytime.

And here is an avocet, which can be seen in England but I’ve never seen on. It’s walking along next to some pochard ducks.

I think this is a sandpiper.

I think this could be a marsh sandpiper.

I knew this had to be some sort of plover, it reminded me of the wee ringed plovers we get. I looked it up and found that it is called a kentish plover.

Egrets were a very common sight. What was NOT a common sight was swans. Not one swan did I see in Mallorca.
