This month we visited Morton Lochs, part of Tentsmuir nature reserve in Fife. Around the lochs there are several hides from which to watch the wildlife and what I was really hoping to photograph was a kingfisher. However the lochs had been frozen and no kingfishers had been seen there since December. I’ll need to return in the spring. What we did get a good sighting of was a red squirrel, feasting on nuts left out on a log.

My normal go to place to photograph red squirrels is the bird hide at Aberfoyle. However here was a much more open site with far better light for photography. It was quite a treat to see this wee chap!

A group of Mallard ducks came waddling over to the log and chased the squirrel off.

A curious robin posed for its photo as per usual.

Then a great spotted woodpecker came on the scene. First it alighted on a nearby tree.

Then it made flew down and made its way up the log in front of the hide, but alas what should have been great shots of it turned out blurry.

A beautiful male blackbird came and perched in front of me. As spring approaches I am looking forward to its melodic singing heralding in the new season, one of my favourite ever sounds.
