Today has been an exceptionally mild day for the start of the second week of March. As well as blackbirds starting to sing I heard frogs croaking and purring close to the edge of the Alloch Dam where I live. As I got close to the sound I started to make out these slimy amphibians gathering and calling to each other in a water channel.

Some were in water, others were coming out of the leaf litter of the wood. I wonder if they were just beginning to come out of hibernation.

I think I am correct in thinking these were frogs. Frogs have much longer legs for hopping and jumping than toads. Also they look smoother and slimier, whereas toads have drier, warty looking skin.
Spring has definitely begun!
