After weeks of watching I finally saw an owlet in the tawny’s nest in the wood. Two years ago I saw three owlets in the nest but it appears that this year there is just the one. Or is that another owlet tucked in behind it? Other siblings may have branched out from the nest in the last week or so when I was away. I’ve not seen any in trees or bushes around though.

Mum has now left the nest and I was fortunate enough to find her roosting in a nearby tree. This is her sheltering in the rain.

The other evening we went looking for the tawnies again. This time we could see no sign of the owlet. It could have been hunkered down deep in the nest or it could have branched out. But we did see the adult owl again. Here are some photos taken form different angles.

I’ll keep looking to see if I can find the owlet amongst the lush green vegetation of the wood. It could be like looking for a needle in a haystack! However I’m very grateful to have seen the tawnies this year, as none were spotted by me in 2024.
