Berry Banqueting

The trees and bushes are laden with red berries this Autumn and the birds are enjoying the berry banquet. Here are photos of various types of birds feasting on them, and even a grey squirrel getting its five a day!

The fieldfares are back from Scandinavia for their winter holiday here. They fly around in large flocks making chittering and chooking noises. You often see large groups of them scoffing berries, but they are very skittery and fly off when people approach.

This blue tit was having its fill of berries before nightfall.

One of my favourite songbirds is the blackbird. However it goes very quiet in autumn and winter time, except for when it makes alarm calls.

Deer can add berries to their diets, but this one was being berry content basking in the late afternoon sunshine.

Along with fieldfares, other visiting birds which enjoy a berry banquet are redwings and waxwings. I’ve heard there are some around in the North East now, hopefully I’ll see some later on in winter time. When they arrive mistle and song thrushes will make some noise to try and chase them away from their food stores.
