Winter Wander Wonders

This photo of Britain’s smallest bird, the goldcrest, feeding amongst the yellow gorse flowers looks like it was taken in summer. Actually it was on a cold winter’s day after a hard frost! Gorse bushes seem to be a favourite feeding ground of this tiny, flighty creature. It took hundreds of attempts to capture it clearly enough on camera. Can you spot it below?

Only now and then would it pop out into the open before flying in amongst the thorns.

Long tailed tits are firm favourites of mine too. They fly in packs and I usually hear them whistling to each other before catching sight of them flitting from branch to branch. This one was all puffed up as it was an icy day.

Deer are wandering closer to the houses in daytime and here they are foraging bramble bush leaves. We’ve seen them in the village streets in the middle of the night munching on our front garden bushes.

The ponds are all frozen over at the moment so this heron was sitting in rough moorland.

When I was attempting to photograph the elusive goldcrest this robin posed as if to say, “never mind wasting your time with that wee critter, here I am!”

And I never can resist a cute robin red breast.
