January Gems

Only a week to go until the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch – I wonder if this great spotted woodpecker will make an appearance when I’m doing my hour’s counting- probably not! Great to see him close up! I know it’s a he from the red patch on the back of his head which females don’t have.

Today I also counted at least a dozen long tailed tits, all taking turns to feed from the fat balls I have hanging from whisks. I just love these characterful wee birds.

The other day we explored Baron’s Haugh Nature Reserve near Motherwell. Here we found a “flotilla” of whooper swans feeding and preening in the loch.

Nearby there was a “deceit” of lapwings settled on a bank. Lapwings feign injury to lure predators from their nests in springtime, this explains the collective noun for them!

Deer always make good subjects to photograph. I can never resist practising on them.

We saw lots of grey squirrels darting about the trees. This cheeky squirrel was enjoying seeds which someone had put out along the parapet of a bridge.

I’ve been feeling a bit low this month but a walk out in nature never fails to lift my spirits.
