Friday Foragers

At last, a dry day with morning and afternoon walks in the countryside with my camera and binoculars! Today I saw four jays and even managed to get this photo of one, albeit with branches in the way. They alerted me to their presence by squawking to each other.

This morning we saw the canal kingfisher again. Only the once however, then we totally lost sight of it.

If only kingfishers could sit still like this cormorant.

Song thrushes have now begun singing their repetitive repertoires and this one temporarily stopped while I took a snap of it. They mostly sing right at the top of the trees but this one was tweeting from within a bush.

Some male pheasants were squaring up to each other inside a large bush and they made the most peculiar growling sound as they did so. This one however was showing off its remarkable plumage out in the open.

This pair of herons were in amongst reeds by a pond. I wonder if they were foraging for frogs.

I crept very slowly and quietly up to this group of deer. It reminded me of the game “what’s the time Mr Wolf” where you creep up closer to the person playing the wolf and when they turn around you freeze. Freezing every time the deer looked at me worked , although they became aware of my presence they weren’t startled.

I also saw four hares dozing and grazing in a field amongst the tussocks. Here are three that were close together.

What a great day. I also heard and saw a woodpecker drumming. It was one that got away … I can’t catch them all!
