Osprey Day

The ospreys are back! They’ve flown thousands of miles from Africa to breed here and are back to fishing the lochs again. Today we took a picnic to our local loch and were treated to views of not just one but two ospreys fishing. I couldn’t get close to see them catch their prey but did see them carry their bounty off. This first osprey was struggling to carry off its large catch, and carrying using only one talon didn’t help to start with!

It managed to hang on though and got a hold of it with its other talon. Here it is silhouetted as it wound its way higher up into the sky.

And in this photo the osprey’s beautiful brown tones stand out.

No sooner had this osprey flown off than another one appeared, its incredible eyesight scanning the loch for a lovely trout. It hovered over a spot and got ready to plummet down and dive in.

This osprey was either an old pro at fishing or got very lucky as it caught a fish within only five minutes of arriving at the loch. Then off it went to take its catch away over the hills to its nest.
