Kite Flying

Twenty years ago Red Kites would have been a rare site in Scotland, due to relentless persecution the century before. This century they have been reintroduced into select areas and now, happily, our third largest raptor is making a good comeback.

Red kites are quite easily distinguishable due to their warm brownish red colours and their forked tails. They are social birds which often scavenge and roost together. They feed on carrion along with worms, beetles, baby rabbits and bird fledglings.

In Central Scotland there is a place called “Argaty Red Kites” which has feeding stations for the kites. This makes it easier for people to observe and photograph them from hides, whilst being educated about their story. I’ve not been there myself but have been fortunate to have seen them a year ago in the highlands, and recently up in Perthshire.

When walking up Ben Chonzie looking for mountain hares I was treated to the sight of these magnificent birds soaring overhead. I consoled myself with the thought that if I didn’t see any mountain hares at least I had been able to photograph Red Kites.

As it was I had the most amazing day out seeing two of nature’s treasures. Keep an eye out for this forked tailed raptor, flying in the wind.
