Feeder Firsts

We’ve had some new visitors to our garden feeder this winter, smaller than the goldfinches and tits, wee redpolls. They have a maroon streak on their heads and pinkish breasts. I’ve never ever seen them in the garden before. There was a group of three feeding from the feeder and on the ground.

We’ve also had a nuthatch come regularly. Sometimes I hear it piping its arrival or departure.

Our regulars too are enjoying the supply of sunflower seeds, peanuts and home made fat balls put out for them. My favourites are the long tailed tits, little fluffy beige bundles.

Here are the red polls sharing with the gold finches.

The blue tits seem to be doing well. Here are three perched on top of the feeding frame.

The great tit is a much larger bird and has a much bolder black stripe down its front.

The coal tit has the dark black head and bib and a paler light brown body.

I hope all the birds including our rarer visitors stay around so I can include them all in the Garden Birdwatch count at the end of the month.
