Mid May Sightings

No otter sightings at all for me this year on our visit to the Isle of Jura. The weather was wilder and the sea much choppier, so maybe that made them harder to spot. Or maybe we just weren’t lucky this year. But the seals were basking in their usual favourite place. You can see why they get nicknamed slugs of the sea.

There were some free range turkeys around the village and down by the shore. That’s not a sight I normally see!

One morning I went a cycle ride with a friend and saw a beautiful wee goldcrest. I didn’t manage a photo. We heard grasshopper warblers, willow warblers and sedge warblers and I managed to snap this sedge warbler in the bushes.

We continued cycling along and I noticed a wee feathery fluff ball right in the middle of the track. I went to try and pick it up to carry to a safer place but it managed to fly up off the track and up onto this windowsill. I think it’s either a wren or robin fledgling.

On our way home from Jura we stopped at Arrochar. Here there were some ducklings in the sea loch.

On the evening we were back home we couldn’t resist going up to Owl Wood to see if we could spot any of the owlets. We just couldn’t spot them, which is good, as their camouflage is working for them at this most vulnerable stage of their lives. We did see their parents however. Dad was on his favourite perch. This is a dark photo but the light was beginning to fail.

Mum was occasionally calling “kweek” and was keeping an eye on her youngsters. We saw her once before she flew into another tree.

On the other hand, more likely she was keeping an eye on us!
