I visited the isle of Mull on a recent campervan trip and had intended going to Loch na Keil, a well known otter hotspot frequented by wildlife photographers. However we didn’t have to leave our campsite pitch near the pier at Craignure to see this otter. I was sitting having breakfast when up popped this otter in the bay in front of me!

What a treat to see it fishing and munching fish in the bay.

I’m assuming it was the same otter which reappeared just before sunset one evening. I watched it swim across the bay then take its catch up onto a buoy to eat it.

It was beautifully silhouetted as the sun got lower in the sky. Just as the sun was setting it the reflection over the water made it too bright to photograph it.

Then the otter slipped into the water and cavorted playfully, enjoying bathing in the water which was probably warmer than usual. Here are some of my shots from a truly magical half hour watching it.

Finally it disappeared around the corner of the bay and I turned in for the night. It was about 10.40pm by this time! Sunset had been about 10.10pm. The way things turned out we didn’t visit the loch for otter spotting. I was more than content with seeing this frisky fellow!
